Every firm is different & they all have different case loads and volumes. You’re not “falling behind”; your firm is just operating at a different pace than other firms that might have a lot more volume.
My first year was a lot like yours, but I kept asking for motion work until I finally got it. Sometimes you just have to keep asking for more substantive work until you get it.
Mastering discovery and depo prep is a crucial part of your job; you may not notice it, but you’re getting more and more experience every time you do those things.

You're definitely falling behind. I may be overworked in my day to day (3 mediations and two court hearings today alone) but that is much better than not being able to do anything. I'd run if I were you.

3 mediations. First one lasted about 15 minutes, then hearing, then next two mediations followed by court hearing end of day. Mediations were shorter than expected otherwise other lawyers in firm were prepared to handle hearings for me.
Trust me, I want out. Doing this much work every day is killing me. I work from 8am to 11pm most days.
Respectfully, 8mo in you don't know shit. You need to be learning medicine, mechanism of injury, anatomy, coverage issues, and I could go on and on. I wouldn't let you mediate a dispute over a toy between my kids after only 8mo in. BUT you should at least be asking to attend and observe and begging to cover hearings and do whatever you can. If they won't give you learning opportunities then you should consider a move. But nobody should be trusting you with the keys to the ferrari yet either.
I wouldn't say falling behind necessarily, but, you aren't getting throw into the deep end and cannot learn.
I would ask where they see you the next year and ask if they will provide you with the opportunity to negotiate/handle depos/hearings etc. If no, run.
No motion work? Should def be covering PCs at this point.
I wouldn't say you are falling behind by any means. Most (not all) PI cases don't go to trial so you won't really get a lot of experience with trial.
