If you’re good at your job I wouldn’t worry about layoffs.
Umm...I'm calling BS on this
It's always been like this. I've been here 20 years. Firm has grown from smaller regional to large national. We've always done layoffs/reductions to manage headcount and low performance. Best advice - make yourself valuable, be a team player, have a great attitude. I've almost never (like only once in 20 years) seen average-to-strong performers let go, and that was after the 2008 recession when they just had to cut heads and no one was 'bad.' Also, the good thing in accounting is that everyone still needs accountants, so even if you get laid off, there should always still be a job market.
Marcum1 - not quite sure I follow what you’re saying. However, this industry has operated an up or out pyramid for over 100 years. Many people are fine seniors, but don’t make good managers or they’re not good enough compared to peers and they get impacted.
Truth is, if you’re reliant on another, it’ll never truly be safe. Not to mention many firms stack and rank employees
To be fair there are countless other industries that are getting hit much worse then the accounting field. Being online too much can feel as if doomsday is going to happen which it wont
Accounting is a dead-end career given AI.

Jerome needs to lower rates if accountants are concerned about job security
There's concerns everywhere in the accounting industry. I have not been laid off but market is dry where I live and salaries are lower than 3 years ago.
Mid-sized firms in the suburbs of NYC can't find enough skilled accountants. When I speak with friends at other small to mid-size companies they are also hiring. The layoffs only seem to be going on at larger firms from what I'm seeing.
I hear that a lot from people in CA. Or if they find something it’s less than pay in the Midwest. CA’s job market for CPA’s may not be representative of the rest of the USA.
So nothing is 💯 (I came from the big four prior to that small midsize)
•Proximity principle - networking which could mean going to grad school reputable program (working) or networking within your firm
• Being useful /easy to work with
• also knowing when it’s time to go that could be an internal move
Also I think we all have to decide how we re going to be of value and differentiate ourselves
it is going to get a lot worse unless we end all visa/greencard programs and stop offshoring. if people want to stay in denial on why these need to be ended, then expect a lot of unemployment in your future even if you haven't had to deal with that yet.
