What are some LS hedge funds? Newbie here
Orbimed, Rock Springs, Perceptive Advisors to name a few. Don’t forget all multi-manager HFs have pretty sizable LS teams in place.
A close friend has worked at a top hedge fund for five years. I can tell you about the WLB, from an outsiders perspective.
Work is Sunday - Friday and he typically works about 12 hrs per day (with less on Sunday).
The work environment is very intense. People are regularly fired and being there 5 years is considered an eternity. I’ve actually met more people who have been fired from his hedge fund, than those who actually work there.
It is common for people to scream at work and it is a high pressure environment.
Financially, the rewards are supposed to be amazing. He is 30 and once commented that a person makes $600k/yr, is just average at the firm.
OP, going directly from consulting to HF is doable, but challenging considering HFs have their pick of the litter. In general, HFs would like to select candidates familiar with public markets and fundamental analysis, skill sets that are more common in ER, IB, and PE compared to consulting.
Also as BCG1 stated, MD and/or PhD is almost a pre-requisite in this space nowadays.
The stress within HFs is monitoring/valuing your ~50 company coverage (and their competition), having regular pitches before a portfolio manager, and trying to have your picks not get blown out.
As an associate, stress percolates down and your workload will often match the senior analyst.
