If they're asking it back then it must've been in the fine print, but if it 100% didn't mention any of that, you could potentially disagree and refer to the agreement

Read your employment agreement. Maybe there’s a clawback provision.

This is most likely not legal. Double check any agreements to make sure the clawback isn’t in the fine print. I once quit on the day of the payout and was able to keep it so not sure why the employer is doing this to you.
Please someone tell me as well- how does this work as I was told if I leave then I have to pay it back but I did not see any paperwork stating this and I left today.
