Follow up as long as you're interested. You won't get fired for it. But you may have to change your approach if you really want to switch. After this follow up, switch gears to "this transfer opportunity may not have worked out, but are there other opportunities?" or "how else can I get involved in the team's work? BD, eminence..."
Edit: it’s been a little over a month now in total since initial intro.

Get the req # and figure out who the HR person is

If you know someone in HR they will tell you. Technically the contact isn’t given out ever but I’ve known people in HR who will pass me to the person working the req. This recently happened at D and I don’t even work there. Do some digging and networking.
