A jail is a place where people who have been arrested are held before they are brought to trial. A prison is a place where people are sent after they have been convicted of a crime.
A jail is a short-term facility used to detain people who are awaiting trial or who have been convicted of a misdemeanor. A prison is a long-term facility used to detain people who have been convicted of a felony.
Jail is for short periods of time, they are people who are not serving a sentence, generally for minor offenses or are awaiting sentencing.
The prison is a residence for convicted criminals, its buildings are much larger than prisons and have more interns.
