No client outside of Detroit wants to come to Detroit for meetings. Those offices are all relics of the auto heyday and now that those car companies are all leaving the local shops, those Detroit offices will eventually be phased out.
@VP Account Director 1 sums it up. Sadly, now that virtually all the car business is serviced from outside Motown, the Detroit ad industry will continue to shrink.
Thanks for reminding me to rewatch Detroiters
Every single Detroit agency I encountered through the years bent over backwards to drive work outside of the state. Commercial shoots, video shoots, still photography shoots. Entire creative teams made an enormous and very vocal point of how much they didn’t want to be or work in Detroit, in the state of Michigan, or even in the Midwest. It’s no surprise at all that the whole market there boxed themselves out of jobs.
“Entire creative teams”… somehow I feel like this really means ECDs and CDs. I worked on Stellantis at the agency that shares its name with a kebab.
The higher level creatives were always out west or somewhere cold, snowy and mountainous, while the creatives who actually concepted the work were at home or at the office, not invited to the shoots.
It was weird because one specific ECD would brag about the photos they’d taken with a celebrity and how they enjoyed the shoot. I’m like, “I’m glad you wrote the script and developed the storyboards.” They don’t do anything but reap the fruits of the labor of actual creatives.
The ambitions of higher level creatives are always insatiable.
Those agencies have offices all over.
Unless you’re specifically seeing roles for Detroit clients, it’s sort of meaningless as the headcount in NY etc way exceeds Detroit and always will.
Detroit is also an odd one. Dominated by auto and local Detroit corps. People tend to stay at agencies forever which makes openings scant, and it’s such a little clique-y world that often new jobs are never posted and are just referral based.
It’s like the city of Detroit on four wheels
They have asbestos
The way things are going, there will be agencies only in one city per country. All the agencies will be in NY, London, Paris, etc.
Interesting take.
