Worked there. One person in leadership is a covid truther who used status meetings to spew conspiracy theories, even admitting “I’ve been pretty reckless during lockdown because I might as well get Covid so I don’t need to get the vaccine.” Like what????!?
I also sat through a very upsetting exchange where a client was openly homophobic during an all agency. When I raised the issue to HR, they said to me “You do realize he’s a client, right?”
I could go on and on. If any GUT people swarm this post to defend their name…well…I’m merely reporting incidents that dozens can corroborate.
Oh, and while it’s very noble of Anselmo to always post about striving to be the most diverse agency in the world, it’s not backed by actions. Almost every single creative leader is a white or Latino man, including all of the recent CD-and-up hires. They’ll hire diverse entry level talent, sure, but look at press releases of leadership hires and you’ll see a pattern pretty quickly.

Just to follow up here since the discourse took a turn…ACD/Copywriter1 is spot-on in their assessment. It’s a total boy’s club in creative leadership where they’ve hired all their friends and highly-awarded friends of friends.
I deeply admire Anselmo and respect his vision and passion for the industry. However, he is not involved in the day-to-day running of the offices by design, and that’s where his agency falls short. It is the most toxic and gaslighting environment I have ever encountered.
At the beginning of lockdown last year, the ECDs called a creative dept meeting to express disappointment in us for coming up with ideas that are “6s and 7s” but not “9s and 10s.” People were frustrated and shared stories like not having time to shower. To which the ECDs basically said the pandemic is not an excuse and we need to have better ideas. The incident was reported to HR, and at a creative dept meeting later that summer the ECD joked about creatives reporting his sycophantic behavior. The PTSD I got from GUT is not going away anytime soon 😕.

They’re like any agency. Some good people. Some not so good. But if you do go there, you will at least fill your portfolio with awards and great work. They’re certainly not more toxic than any major NYC agency.

Winning Lions takes a literal alignment of the stars. Internal and external. If one client within the brand isn’t on board, it’s not happening
Not a great place if you’re not young, single and childless. But great if you’re all of that and want to grow quickly and win tons of awards.
