It depends on what group you are in
Agree with EY1, depending on the group they’ll move you to a “specialist” role if you’re non-client facing.

Yes. SM’s are worth their weight in gold. What partner would try to push out a long tenured SM who’s skilled and capable of overseeing the partner’s engagements and handling the clients?
One that has a backlog of senior managers that won’t advance to the next level in their firm.
If you just want to do client service as a SM you're probably going to get pushed out at some point. Even if you agree to it with your current leadership, you're always in danger of having a future leader come in and say "that isn't how we do things." If you do some internal stuff well that need the client service experience (think operations, certain quality functions) you can more safely be a career SM. Bonus safety if you can keep some clients so you don't get shoved into a non-client service title.
Much more the exception than the norm that you can stay forever as an SM. SMs are expensive and the expectation is you’re using that time to ready yourself to have your own book of business as a PPMD - you’ll hit the end of the road quickly (in most cases) once people start thinking that path isn’t for you
KPMG used to allow them and now it’s a no go. Once the partners have decided you’re not advancing you’re politely told to transfer to an internet group our quit.
I have an SM who’s been here for like 15 years and refused promotion multiple times and she’s still here
Great question. I can tell you that you do reach a point where while valuable if you are not going to reach partner and there are people below you now that they think are better they will have no problem asking you to leave.
Depends on the firm. Most big firms are up or out. Smaller firms are more likely to allow it.
CLA’s roles are specifically designed to allow this and we encourage it. It’s the track I’m on as I don’t want to be out in the market and externally growing like my partner path peers.
