Stay and collect until you find something better. End of the day if you aren’t producing good work - it will hurt you in the long run. Assuming this gig won’t add anything to your book
Long run? $200K for nothing IS the long run. 🤣
Good god can I have your job? Write a novel.
Stay for as long as you can and do actual creative work on the side that you and you alone can glean money and personal success from.
Stop wasting your creative energy making c-suites and shareholders richer.
Forgive me, ASC1. I can tell you are definitely one of us :)
And knowing your meaning, I have to say I agree with you: while I maintain plenty creative things get done, I *do* save my most creative energy for....screenplays. Quite a few. Haven't optioned any, though, so.....DM me, I'd love to read yours :)
Your job sounds awesome for real
Depends where you’re at financially. I would see if you can try to set yourself up for success long term. Meaning save as much of that 200k as possible for at least 1-2 years and stay creative and stimulated in your personal life, using this time to build up strong work life balance habits while saving money, that you can continue to save, invest, or use to support yourself a year or two later taking a job that is much more creatively fulfilling. — that’s just one take.
HOWEVER! I recently had a a good friend, mentor and CCO of a highly regarded agency tell “the money will come, the titles will come, but the only way to get there, and arrive there happy when your my age, is to be in shops that are all about the work, everyone says they’re all about the work on paper, but to be in a place that really is a creative force is the only way to truly shape you into the place you want be. The rest will come with time. Just dedicate yourself to the work, being particular about where you set yourself up, because the job offers, the money, the titles will all come, but makes sure it’s in the right atmosphere.”
Agree with the financial aspect. Look into FIRE to max your savings. If you’re able to take some creative gigs on the side or work on a passion project that inspires you until you find your next agency.
Have a look in the mirror and ask yourself how long a career you might have in General advertising. Will you be able to work in you late 40s and beyond?
I had MORE energy at age 40 than I had at even age 20!
Take the bank and find a side passion, like Buddhism or lorazepam
If you still have a desire for non pharma, I’d start looking since it’ll only get harder the longer you wait
I've been able to do some really fun concepting at my pharma shops over the years—-campaigns that ran internationally, disease state education that looked nothing like "pharma"——and I'm not even an ACD yet. You've only been there a few months. Give it time.
I'm not going to argue that there are as many opportunities for free-wheeling creativity in pharma as there are outside of it. But the idea it's utterly devoid of those opportunities is just un-nuanced, ignorant b.s. from folks with little to zero experience in it. If you're good enough, you'll have a good book, regardless of the category.
Find time to write on the side--it's what all successful authors say!
1. How does one get into pharma copywriting without pharma background? Really?
2. A $200k salary, when spent wisely, is a great opportunity to boost a solid rainy day fund.
3. Spend that extra free time updating/sharpening your book with the work you're proud of and want to do.
4. Hone your skills writing exciting jingles like, "I'm lowering my A-1C. Jardiance is really swell. The little pill with the big story to tell." ;-)
Stay and collect. But spend every minute working to get that other job. Set yourself a deadline and quit if you don’t get it by then
