I’m not sure if you are f2f or virtual. But I feel like a good lab would be to give each student a nail (steel) and see who can get it to rust first (or the most). The winner would have most certainly used salt with water/air to get the metal to react.

This year I had my students naked homemade handwarjers. We used iron filings, calcium chloride salt, and water marbles (the water absorbing polymer beads). You can find the beads at craft store and online, they are super inexpensive. It's a great exothermic reaction, addresses redox concepts, rates of reactions etc.... I also show them the dispisable hand warmers that are sold in the outdoorss section of big box stores. I also have the instant cold packs from the nurses office. I am able to show them these products and explain the basic chemistry that allows them to be hot or cold.

Trigger: rare illness post birth

Just sharing that I was diagnosed with postpartum preeclampsia 3 days after giving birth despite not having risk factors or preeclampsia in my pregnancy. Sharing as I had absolutely no idea about this illness.

Main things to do are check your BP everyday at least the first ten days after you give birth, and go to hospital if it's very high (over 160/110). If you get severe headache or stomach ache then also be vigilant.

Happy to answer any questions!

What are some creative ways to teach labs online?

I have a question about energy levels and electrons. I teach 10th grade. What is more appropriate: saying the 3rd energy level can fit 8 or 18?? Technically if you include the d orbital it’s 18 correct? But then when you draw potassium you only put 8 on the 3rd energy level and 1 on the 4th….. after 10 years of teaching I STILL second guess myself. Thanks!!

Has anyone attempted lab “kits”? A small set of materials you send home with a kid to do a lab at home?

For students who don't fit the traditional Chem profile, we offer Chemistry in the Community (ChemComm) from the American Chemical Society. The SI is wanting to "reevaluate" our course offerings and make sure we have "the right class" going forward. So now I'm on a committee. Does anyone have any recommendations for entry-level Chem classes? Or do you use Chem Comm and recommend sticking with it? (we've had it for 20 years, but its my first year teaching it due to a retirement).
