Could I get a market check on in-house corporate counsel roles in Denver/Boulder? 5 YOE in BigLaw M&A. I’d ideally like to land $220k base plus bonus and equity. Is that reasonable? I’m less concerned about bonus and equity, but I’m trying to figure out what’s reasonable for base

Don’t know about Denver but that would definitely be reasonable in NYC

like

Industry and size of company would be big factors.

With 5 YOE, I would expect you to come in at a junior/ early midlevel ish role. In a average COL location I think a reasonable range is 165k-190k for the base. In a HCOL location like NY, or industry like Big Tech (FAANG+), Big Energy, etc. I could see $200k being reasonable. Im not sure if Colorado demands HCOL rates or average. I assume HCOL rates would be applicable.

Bonus and Equity varies significantly by industry, company size and whether the company is public. I would expect a ceiling around 20 or 25% for bonus or equity (but could be as low as 0, honestly)

Consider looking at the salary surveys from various recruiting firms (RobertHalf, etc)

I agree

What industry?

That would be high in Denver, absent a remote role for a company based elsewhere. Denver is usually in Tier 2 for salary ranges (and they all have to be published, or should be to comply with state law). It's not considered with LA, SF, NY. Most local companies shoot for the middle of the range, not the top.

I work in a corp environment & wondering what others think about this -

I have a large team and after me, I have a supervisor and a manager who my supervisor reports to. The manager recently got promoted to director & my boss is likely to take her role within the next 6 mos.

I was promoted in aug and wondering if it’s crazy to ask for another promo after my boss gets manager. This wouldn’t be for 6-12mos & I will be in my role for close to a year.

Is this too soon to ask? TIA!

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

NFW- I just had a good laugh. Earlier today I was on a video conference call reviewing a Private Label Agreement template with a larger company who wishes to brand label products we develop and manufacture. We came to a very one-sided provision and my sales VP stated “for this one, how can we just say ‘hell no’ ...nicely?” The other person on the call said we can replace the wording with just NFW (no f@$* way) and I said “I will have to add that to the defined terms section so it’s clear”

Big law specialist with an offer to be the CFO and GC of a 250M AUM hedge fund. All in comp would probably be ~$300k, so about $100k less than where I would be in big law (including bonus). Potential to get involved in the business side, but most likely more of a back office role (I would also be the only legal hire - main goal would be cutting outside legal cost and streamlining processes). Does this sound like an attractive offer? What exit options would I have?

Have interviews set up at FAANG co and getting good signals, for a position that was posted widely (all across US) but not remote. Haven’t broached the subject of location yet. Would you (1) early on clearly state that you’re not open to relocation but that you would be open to visiting a big office once or twice a month; (2) not say anything now and wait to get an offer and ask for an exemption; or (3) something else?
