Chief
Sorry I dont get the appeal to want to work hard and be a GC. I like my job, get paid well 450 TC as a cog in a machine. Never miss family stuff and have chill life. My career is not my identity. YOLO
There are so many levels between lawyer on a 5-person team and GC. Go to a bigger company that has a decent sized department. See how well-run departments look. Learn and move up. Don't throw yourself into a GC position at some tiny company where you will be ill-prepared and probably ill-compensated.
I think you should stop worrying about your teammates and just do what you can in a reasonable amount of time. It's your boss's job to worry about work not getting done because people are slacking.
Sorry you have to deal with that.
Is your manager bad in your current position? How many years of experience and how likely would you be to get a GC job? How willing are you to give up WLB to move up the ladder?
Remote jobs are super competitive right now. Being a GC from what I’ve seen is a lot of work. They were always on and dealing with fires. I’ve done both the smaller legal team and the big company and I prefer a big company if all else is equal, but it’s for the WLB and I have small children I want to be present for. You’ll probably have lazy teammates too but spreading things out in a pubco is usually easier.
I don’t think it’d hurts to apply and see what is out there, but try to pin down what’s most important to you right now (climbing/grinding vs stability and WLB for example).
Yes. Manager isn’t good. I am considering whether the strategic nature of a GC role would be better than doing a lot of in the weeds type things. It’s not about grinding but if I am going to leave, I want it to be a move in the right direction. As long as people’s laziness don’t affect me, I don’t care. But if I have to work hours extra each day to absorb their work, I do.
I can’t really imagine a GC role anywhere not being stressful and super busy. I think that’s sort of the way it goes. And you will always have to deal with people you feel are underperforming when you lead a team long enough. I’ve never been a GC, so what do I know, but it seems like that’s all somewhat inevitable and part of the deal if you want to go to that level.
I dont necessarily want to give up the remote life but having a bad manager creates issues.
