To make matters worse, most of the 120 vertical partners are men and from a culture that’s not mature enough to treat a woman as an equal or a business partner. I have made attempts to set expectations with my 6 peers on my role and have requested them to share the same with their teams. However, many of the 120 vertical partners continue to expect me to give them 50hrs of work each week. I am now looking to have 1-1 with some of the specific vertical partners who’s expectations may be misaligned. I need your tips on how to accomplish this in the most professional way.
Is there a platform or company tool where you can track your scope and priorities openly (like confluence). List the priorities and timeline for each effort and assign a stakeholder (those team heads) for each of the items. So if someone is trying to ask you to do sth, work with them to align that thing to your scope and timeline. This way if they would like to bring something ahead, engage the other head and let them fight.
And it would be a great way for you to track your effort and progress in case they falsely allege that you don’t work or try to take your credit.
Dearest Lead,
It's next to impossible because the cultures teach that women are less than and therefore they can blow off your opinions, complaints and requirements. Unless you are a woman that plays to that mentality, you won't get too far. If you told me that they complained about your "tone" regularly,I wouldn't be surprised as it is seen as you mistreating them if you are nice but direct in your approach. Please understand that I respect all cultures, just don't expect me to cater to each. It's supposed to be one workplace with the same rules for all, right?
Mentor
Perform the role you were hired to do and stop worrying about being treated like a doormat since the perception may be self fulfilling behavior. Delegate —don’t be delegated to, that is what your male counterparts are doing.
Does the work you do for the 6 verticals overlap or does each vertical have individual needs?
Treating the verticals as projects essentially each vertical has about 7 hours per week of your time. Sometimes more, sometimes less depending on priorities. Reframing your role to the verticals with assistance of your manager might help.
Good luck.
I have been working 50 plus hour weeks including several weekends. But the thanklessness and continued ask for more is beginning to get to me
