Develop transferrable skills that make you more valuable now, and position you for a move, later.
If you're getting more serious about making a pivot, start making plans. Just doing that may lead you to some answers about how best to proceed. Going back to school may be expensive, so think about what you could do without taking on debt. Layoffs can happen at any time, so you might as well be making plans. If you never need to execute on the plans, all the better, but your planning will teach you some things so it won't be a waste of time.
I would work on a backup now. The job market is awful and people are looking for jobs for months before they land anything. It is better to start looking now and have a backup plan.
Also thinking about this. I’m about 4 years into my career, mid 20s. I’m realizing I don’t enjoy what I do as much, am definitely overworked and underpaid, and frankly just want more stability and job security. Curious to hear what you’re thinking about pivoting to OP?
I'm starting to feel that same way. I'm in my 30s, underpaid, underappreciated and overworked. I've started to realize how burned out I am from working in the creative industry (especially with how cliquey this industry can be). Especially with most companies turning to AI to do most of their creative work instead of hiring actual artists these days. I also currently work in advertising and I'm starting to realize how much I've fallen out of love with this career field. And the crappy economy and equally crappy job market hasn't been helping with that.
I'm considering doing a switch into the tech field, particularly in computer/phone maintenance and just keeping design as a hobby or a side gig. Tinkering with gadgets has always been one of my favorite hobbies for years (I even built my own computer for the first time during COVID). A friend in mine who works in the tech industry has mentioned that there are plenty of tech repair companies/businesses that are always hiring and willing to train, even if you don't have previous experience. So that may me where I end up pivoting to.
Get out of advertising. Plenty of other places to be a designer whether its at a branding studio or in house somewhere.
Go back to school and accumulate more debt given the overall flux the global job market is in though? The amount of jobs a lot of corporations have laid off this year doesn’t signal it’s safer to switch careers without adapting to the direction everything is headed. An outdated school curriculum probably won’t be the answer.
You don't have to go to school to pivot. Focus on learning, not institutions. It could be as simple as reading a book.
