If we wanted 2nd year work we would hire a second year. But it wasn’t uncommon for us to adjust the class year of more senior associates, to give them time to build a reputation and network before reaching advancement gates. That’s why a 5th or 6th year might get slotted in as a 3rd or 4th year.

Not typically. Sometimes, if there's a need in a specialist area, it happens.
I wouldn’t say they specifically prefer or tend to hire more senior attorneys for those roles, but that doesn’t mean it never happens. If you’re thinking about applying, I’d go ahead and give it a shot to see what kind of feedback you get.
