Do law firms generally track attorneys' CLE compliance? Do they ask attorneys to report and send the certificate every time the attorney finishes a CLE? Thank you.

My firm does it for us.

like

We are responsible for making sure we have enough CLE credits. Every reporting year, we have to provide a certificate demonstrating that our license is in good standing.

like

It is common within larger firms. Of course, it is incumbent on the attorney to review the records being kept and certainly no one should be reporting or certifying to the bar other than the attorney. But not out of the norm for a firm to ask for certificates of attendance/completion.

like

I see. Thank you! My firm says they must track every attorney's compliance for purposes of malpractice insurance.

In responsible for making sure I do my own CLEs but my firm will pay for whichever ones I want to take.

like

That's very nice. My firm encourages me to take free CLEs.

I’m in house, but willing to contribute thoughts. We’re responsible for tracking our own, but the company will pay for “professional development” which includes CLE (typically, we use for conferences). That said, our outside firms offer more than enough free CLE to clients that you could complete without paying for it.

like

Pretty good bonus!

Mine doesn’t. I think they just assume/expect that I will make sure I’m maintaining my license.

like

My firm tracks compliance, sends reminders, and pays for whatever CLE I want to take but I send a certificate every time I finish a CLE.

like

That's nice and thoughtful! When firms pay, it makes sense that they will track.

Our state bar tracks compliance and requires the hosting party to submit CLE attendance for the event. My firm just pulls that from the bar. Take this with a grain of salt, as I am chronically over my CLE credits due to bar activity and using CLE events as networking opportunities.

like

Interesting and very attorney-friendly!

If they are paying for it, particularly if they are paying you directly, yes. Additionally, you cannot practice law if your CLE hours are not current. They do not need that headache.

like

Agree. If they pay, they have a right to track. I guess I'm one of the few who have to report but do not get reimbursement.

Mine doesn’t but they pay for our CLEs. I suspect if we received notice of noncompliance, we would probably hear from the firm.

After about 18 months of hustling, I’ve been offered my first AD role. My background is in engineering so for what feels like forever I’ve been building (and rebuilding) my book with creative work and it’s finally paid off 🎉

I want to hit the ground running so I’m trying to learn as much as possible before I start.

Can anyone recommend some books, shows, talks, social accounts etc that I can learn from?

Thank you!

Advice on managing up / enduring toxic deal teams? I’m at the point where my stomach drops any time I see something come in from certain people. Everything is behind, client is unhappy, I’m exhausted and simultaneously being micromanaged without guidance on big-picture/substantive issues.
