Do referrals really make a difference?
I’ve heard referrals move your resume to the top of the pile — but does that still hold true? In my last company, we value so much on referrals, but in my current company, people don’t care about referrals at all.

My team has an open role. I referred an old coworker with great qualifications and they were interviewed right away and have second and third rounds this week. If those go well we are likely not interviewing any other candidates. I commented elsewhere that literally none of the applicants on LinkedIn right now are even worth interviewing so this referral came in clutch.

I also just referred my sister for a role on another team and she was screened and given interviews right away. She is very qualified but basically got her resume to the top of the pile with my referral.

@OP to answer your question, the influence of a referral is usually inversely correlated with the brand name of a company. For a small team at some random company? They'll probably hire your referral. For a company like Meta or Amazon? I wouldn't be surprised if their whole stack of resumes came from referrals.

Referrals still matter, but of course that would depend on the culture of the company. Some places no doubt place a very high value on referrals and connections (including family, school, clubs, and so on). As that can get overdone, there's probably a natural aversion to it in other places.

Yes, sounds like that, referral is still important for some jobs

If you have a referral or can get one, I would always do that. It’s not going to hurt my chances. It’s not a guarantee, but that always depends on the place.

As long as the person referring you is in good standing there is no down side

It definitely still helps
