I look at those requirement lists as a way to weed out people who aren’t confident in their ability to figure it out
Totally agree with this!
A lot of times it’s more of a “wish list” of things they are hoping to get
Chief
True. Sometimes it does feel like the “requirements” are more about describing a perfect candidate who probably doesn’t exist.
If I meet 60-70% of them I’m applying.
Chief
Yeah, that sounds like a reasonable cutoff. At some point, applying is the only way to know whether those “requirements” are real or just nice-to-haves.
I always proactively say in an interview I’m interested in the role because I have the skills and work ethic to hit the ground running and make an immediate impact, but also interested in learning the other aspects that I’ve been interested in as part of my career progression.
Chief
That’s a really good way to frame it. It shows confidence in what you already bring, without pretending you know everything. I like that it turns the gap into part of the growth opportunity instead of a weakness.
I always apply even if I don’t meet all the requirements. If someone meets all the requirements, they’re likely overqualified for the role.
Pro
If I meet enough and if I’m local then yes.
If the list is very extensive, a person likely won't have time to execute all the skills anyway. In a typical case, identifying core skills plus additional ones which help a little would be more sensible.
