Do you cover significant figures, exponential notation and dimensional analysis (conversions) at the beginning of the course, or interspersed within the curriculum, and for how long?

Beginning and always. But teach it with meaning. Not just rules. It’s all about precision of measurement. Help them know that and it becomes easy and logical.

Beginning of the year because it’s a thread I use all year long.

I have found in 27 years of teaching that the students forget everything I taught because some concepts that use the skills don’t reappear in the curriculum for weeks to months after it’s taught. I end up re-teaching the skill when it’s needed so I ended up wasting a month that could have been used for other content and making student connections. It isn’t in our state curriculum or next gen standards as a separate unit. It’s embedded in the standards. My 2cents

. That is an essential skill. It must be taught at the beginning.

At our school we used to do it in the beginning, but have moved to doing less and less at the beginning and more throughout. I like it better throughout.

Beginning, although the other chem teacher at my school doesn’t cover sig figs (because it’s hard for the kids) 🙄

Same at my school 😒. However the kids can learn it, they can do hard things.

I am going through a background verification with HireRight for Microsoft. I put as job titles the ones I also put on my resume, which are matching my real duties and activities. However, apart from my last employer, my past internal employers have really weird internal titles that say nothing about my qualifications and skills. Will this cause any issue and push Microsoft to rescind my offer?

What are some creative ways to teach labs online?

I have a question about energy levels and electrons. I teach 10th grade. What is more appropriate: saying the 3rd energy level can fit 8 or 18?? Technically if you include the d orbital it’s 18 correct? But then when you draw potassium you only put 8 on the 3rd energy level and 1 on the 4th….. after 10 years of teaching I STILL second guess myself. Thanks!!

Any favorite online lab simulations? We already use PhET and Gizmos.

Chemistry labs for middle school? Especially metals and salts

For students who don't fit the traditional Chem profile, we offer Chemistry in the Community (ChemComm) from the American Chemical Society. The SI is wanting to "reevaluate" our course offerings and make sure we have "the right class" going forward. So now I'm on a committee. Does anyone have any recommendations for entry-level Chem classes? Or do you use Chem Comm and recommend sticking with it? (we've had it for 20 years, but its my first year teaching it due to a retirement).

Has anyone attempted lab “kits”? A small set of materials you send home with a kid to do a lab at home?
