Beginning and always. But teach it with meaning. Not just rules. It’s all about precision of measurement. Help them know that and it becomes easy and logical.
Beginning of the year because it’s a thread I use all year long.
I have found in 27 years of teaching that the students forget everything I taught because some concepts that use the skills don’t reappear in the curriculum for weeks to months after it’s taught. I end up re-teaching the skill when it’s needed so I ended up wasting a month that could have been used for other content and making student connections. It isn’t in our state curriculum or next gen standards as a separate unit. It’s embedded in the standards. My 2cents
. That is an essential skill. It must be taught at the beginning.
At our school we used to do it in the beginning, but have moved to doing less and less at the beginning and more throughout. I like it better throughout.
Beginning, although the other chem teacher at my school doesn’t cover sig figs (because it’s hard for the kids) 🙄
Same at my school 😒. However the kids can learn it, they can do hard things.
