Toronto ad fish 🤠 I’ve spent most of my career working as a copywriter in London (6 years here, 2 years Toronto) and the market is pretty different here. I’m planning on moving back home but wondered….how do you find work in Toronto? Agencies barely post openings, is the recruiter scene strong? Is it mostly who you know?

Yeah many things about our industry from the unnecessary fire drills to the rampant uncertainty mean your mind is always at least a little bit preoccupied by work.
There are ways to cope and make things better, but I haven’t found a proper way to get to my severed-self yet.
I’ve learned that you have to set your boundaries and stick to them. Of course there are nights or weekends when you have to work but when something can wait it should wait.
It’s not always easy to say “I’ll have it tomorrow” or “Do we really need this today?”, but it’s a game changer. We deal with way too much crap, often get faced with arbitrary timelines by someone who over promised a client without checking in with the team, and know what? It’s not worth your mental health.
The job market is scary but nothing is worth burning out.
Yes, it’s pretty demanding and even when I don’t have to work overtime, I’m often still thinking about work.
I have friends who are lawyers who work a lot more than I do.
I have friends in tech pulling 80 hour weeks.

When you decide to devote your life to advertising, time for life no longer matters.
Clearly my sarcasm doesn’t work here…

been there. It sucks. Getting way better lately for me personally. Lately I’ve seen friends for cocktails and not been remotely stressed about a deadline. That’s a win.
Yes. I miss the life I had before I got into this career but I also like the money I make more now :(
Agree with CW1, sorry to hear about your layoff. I experienced one myself. Use the time to explore different things and experience some life while you search for what’s next. And, there are gigs in this industry outside of the mainstream, awards hungry, always-on roles. You can make a really good living in a CRM driven agency writing emails with a lot more time for you if that’s what you’re after. Even smaller agencies, not the ones vying for SAOY, can offer better work/life balance and usually a lot friendlier of folks to work with.
