Definitely
It’s actually pretty well documented. https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2015/10/why-black-workers-really-do-need-to-be-twice-as-good/409276/
Yeah this is the age-old saying that we need to work twice as hard to go half as far. My view is that it has a lot to do with the fact that Chad has an easier time becoming buddy-buddy with the people in power, whereas we can't hang as naturally. Speaking for myself, I don't know how to do golf and Tahoe and sailing and other fancy things--which provide opportunities to connect about things beyond just work--that Chad is more likely to be familiar with.
This!!!!
Absolutely. Feels like I was hired to fill a quota, no one has actually invested any time in me. To have to go around and ask to be staffed, when others don’t have to do it at all, they just get staffed. People say they like me and I’m the heart of our department and such a great team member, but yet I never have enough work or anyone who actually puts an interest in me the way they do with Chad in corporate. It’s demeaning.
Time to make that move!
No, I make it a point to be as mediocre as my other colleagues. 🤣
That part. Learn to tune them out and keep your goals personal and not tied to any company.
Yep - happened at my first firm. When I questioned my unfair review the response was, “we forget you had no experience when you came here. So we expect you to have more experience than you do. You’re just so mature, so maybe that’s why.”
Wow
Definitely feels that way. We have to be super above average or genius level. Average for us gets us disqualified. Really sucks.
It frustrates me so much, because I see so many average white attorneys in big law. Then I see the POC attorneys with something like a MIT undergrad in some ridiculous STEM field(top student), then an Ivy law school and of course doing all of that and not being legacy LOL
Yup and then it feels worse when I start to think oh shit I went and f*cked it up for all the other folks of color who want to apply because they’ll use me as the standard
Precisely.
You know who is the worst about enforcing this double standard: more senior attorneys of color.
The worst cussing (because he def cursed me out) I've ever gotten in this field was from a Black senior partner.
Most times, the Black lawyers aren't doing it out of revenge. They are in the meetings and know what's being said. And, they know there are conversations that even they are left out of. Basically, all of our flaws are magnified and remembered, while Chad's are always minimized and followed by "but".
Yes!
To make things worse, being an immigrant I have an accent and always freak out when I have to speak publicly (in negotiations etc), feeling like I have to sound 3x as smart and articulate just so ppl take me seriously 🤷🏽♀️
Yes! Knowing they probably wrote you off and tuned you out with the first word you said.
absolutely and our mistakes are proof that we're unqualified but chad's mistakes are learning experiences 🤭.
They gaslight you so hard into thinking that.
This thread made me feel very seen. Thanks for posting and all those who replied and shared their experiences. This has happened not just in my legal work, but in other careers before becoming a lawyer as well. Very frustrating.
No, but I worked at a discrimination law firm for years lol
100%
Also, you need to be the spokesperson for your social group and be able to accurately explain an issue or topic regarding said group in 2-3 sentences tops. Any more than that and they get annoyed that you can’t explain with a few sentences that are all encompassing on the matter. Also, many do not really care for the explanation so they’ll tune out mid sentence. Finally, many already have a preconceived opinion, beliefs, and frankly prejudices regarding the matter. So their question is grammatically poised as an interrogatory when in reality it is an assertion.
Yes, and I’ve been accused of “talking fancy” and “using big words to make myself feel smart.” So yeah
As soon as the other associates confirm their "feel" about you being a subpar performer, you become invisible. Let us deal with it.
Yes!!
Oh yes.
All the time.
