I have 2 offers Sr Manager and 180k (base + bonus) vs Manager 220k (base + bonus). I wanted Sr Manager title but the company offering Manager. What should I do? How will it affect my future titles?

Titles don’t mean a thing as long as you can sell yourself to the next company. I didn’t even have a title at my last company and I landed a VP position with only 3 YOE.

Sell yourself right in the future and you’ll be fine. Take the money and the position that gives you the most room for growth.

like

PM1 VP with 3 YOE is still pretty good - most people take a fair bit longer to get to it. But yes banking VP is more like “Manager” at most other places

M at Big4 > SM at xyz

like

That’s a huge difference in salary. But it all depends on what’s important to you. Have you also looked at their benefit package? Insurance is also a big thing that can eat into your pay if it isn’t adequate. Also, what’s WLB and company culture like. List your pros and cons then go with your gut. Sometimes it isn’t all about the money.

like

For the Manager role that's 220k, doesn't that mean if you become a Sr Manager there then your salary should hopefully be much higher compared to the other Sr Manager offer?

like

That is true.

like

I would say $40k more > title. Then, you can work for a Sr. Manager at that company and get paid more than $220k

likehelpful

Agree with the viewpoints that 1) one should avoid getting wrapped up in titles because every company had their own "system" and 2) consider the non-financial aspects of the role. For example, if you need flexibility at home due to a young family, perhaps the expectations of senior manager role won't accommodate what you need.

If you have future plans at the company, you may also want to consider the salary range for the "band level." As an example, 220K may be on the high end for a manager which would position you well once you make the jump to senior manager versus if you accept the lower paying senior manager role, increasing your salary within that band may be harder.

like

Another side to this would be to ask
1. In the Manager 220k position, are you able to be MoM? I ask because for experienced managers, this is a responsibility they may not want to let go as it helps them harness their skills and take them further in their career.
2. How large is the company? Company size “MAY” impact your decision and your future opportunities. If you were to be a Manager in a pretty large company, it shouldn’t affect your future plans as you “might” be able to move to a smaller company, earn competitively with a better title—since you’re concerned about that.
3. Is it a decent company and do you need the money badly? If yes, please forget the title and go for it.

To say titles do not affect your future opportunities would be to say “putting on good and clean clothes won’t affect people’s perception of you”—we know it does most of the time.

I don’t know about selling yourself from a low role and responsibilities to a VP position in a stable company but I know that if you’ve got a great experience in the proposed role with decent level and aspirational responsibilities, that would prepare you for future opportunities without having to be a snake-oil salesperson.

Congratulations!!! I say take the Big 4 offer.

No brainer to take the one with higher salary if the jobs are similar.

Big 4 for sure. More money is just icing on the cake.

What do you do and how do I do it?

It’s a loaded question and I don’t want to be rude not to answer you so, I work in business intelligence and data analytics area.

The company giving higher salary is one of big 4. The other company is relatively new company.

Question 2 answers your question then. Congrats

Hey Bowl,
I work for a late stage(ipo) start up, earlier this year we were acquired & since then they got rid of our yearly bonuses and gave us an ESOP grant.
2 RIFs later we are almost bare bones. Since we are coming up on our usual yearly evaluations many of us assumed (with multiple conversation from our managers) that pay raises and promotions were due.
In a recent All hands we found out that this year there will be no pay raises nor promotions based off merit. Is it time to jump ship?
