Why don’t you banter with him back?
“Turkey bacon is pretty great actually and cleaner considering pigs are known to eat their own waste and humans“
“You know the other day I read a story about how farmers in XX are able to hide their murders by feeding the dead bodies to pigs”
His comment on the rules - I would be less bantery about it so it’s more of a learning opportunity. I would just say that I don’t think so and that every religion has guidelines and teaches discipline. Islam didn’t come with all the rules at once. Early Muslims were taught first about God for 10 years and then the rules were introduced. It’s a journey.
If you know more about the rules in the other religions, I could say something but I find it’s not necessary and a bit of a slope but I also don’t know a lot about it besides the headline and I don’t plan to do more research lol
I think you need to figure out what your style is with engaging and when. Sometimes you ignore but not every time.
This is the way. Throw it back in their face but make it fun.
Food comment aside, stepping away for prayers in middle of work is a disruption. You’re still billing the client for the full day. Just step out and don’t mention it. People take toilet breaks and don’t mention that to clients. You’re just taking care of your business.
OP can choose to be visibly and unapologetically Muslim, this is actually good from an awareness standpoint. I’ve had clients accommodate my prayer breaks/ diet etc. because they worked with vocal Muslims or folks who took the time to educate them in subtle ways, besides it promotes an inclusive work environment.
Ok this isn’t the worst. A racist client on zoom sent a note to my manager stating “she is concerned about my online presence.” I would laugh this off if that client is generally friendly; but if it happens again then report.
Oh was it about posts you may have posted on certain global situations?
And also report it to your manager so they’re aware in case the client cries wolf
Just bc someone is a client doesn’t mean you have to stay silent but you need to also read the room and the client, their role on the project, contract, importance to your firm etc.
“Life is pretty great actually” leave it at that
“All Bacon is all cholesterol anyways and I prefer to take care of my health”
Lots of different types of responses you can consider and different directions to take this
Wow, I’m sorry you had to deal with this and applaud your restraint. Agree with all the comments above on reporting this sort of behavior.
You’re certainly a better person than me. I likely would’ve retorted “How is life with pieces of toilet paper up your a-hole”
I’m sorry you had to deal with this. I don’t really mention I’m Muslim or stepping out to prayer unless specifically asked. I’m a proud muslim but never really had a need to bring it up. Also, while traveling I combine prayers or pray 2 rakat.
Same
“I could never become Muslim”
“Didn’t your mom teach you… Never say never”
“How can you say never if you don’t know a lot about the religion”
There’s sooo many responses. What I’m trying to say is - don’t get upset and sensitive to it, if you can (only you know how that client actually is) try to reframe it, and use it as an opportunity to engage.
From what you’ve shared, this client seems to be curious about Islam and you may be the only muslim you’re exposed to but doesn’t want to outright say it so they’re making these backhanded comments.
Of course, you are not obligated to engage if you don’t want to. But instead of it bothering you and you’re working for this client, turn it around.
Meaning this as sincerely as possible, Think you just need to move on. Comments will always be dropped - when people talk about ‘not being able to do xyz’ see it as a badge of honour that you can actually show discipline and they can’t.
People will always misunderstand, we have it hard enough as is to be seen as equals to our western colleagues, they’ll never understand this grievance, so I wouldn’t make a thing out of it. As others have said, just joke back or whatever
I could never be Christian, imagine worshiping 3 Gods..... Next
