You mean professional development? I don't think so. It just takes the drive to want to better oneself. Where there's a will, there's a way.
Skill set wise? No if anything probably learning more, to not rely on others showing them how to do everything. Network wise, which is probably 75-95% of each individual persons actual value add past the senior ranks? Irreparably damaged. And we can expect to see salaries decline once partners realize that their junior ranks don’t have the sales network to go independent
I’ve 3Xed my salary since 2021, work 2 hours a day, get to see family and friends much more, don’t waste time commuting, or polluting the environment because I live in a community where I can walk everywhere. . . and now I’m interviewing for a second full time role to fill my free time.
Im content. Even with one job, I don’t care to make more if it means a hybrid or on site role. I make vastly more than the area average, invest well, and save significantly. I would be miserable if it meant commuting, dealing with people I really don’t care to see all day, and having to twiddle my thumbs to ensure I look busy 8 hours a day.
So if this is losing significant development, I’m okay with that.

The problem with remote work is not us not going in the office but Partners and Directors not going in regularly. In a virtual environment they easily ghost calls or don’t even spend the time talking to juniors. In an office environment like here in Switzerland you just go coffee breaks and talk to them for 15-20 minutes. Face to face time is invaluable!
I forgot to add that in person training is so much more effective at least for me. I did all day sessions online and in person and I have to admit that remotely I didn’t pay too much attention!

To an extent yes. I think going into office every once in a while as a team is good.
For sure - but i think the hybrid model works well as long as your firm has a regional/local staffing structure.
People who want to capitalize on in-person professional development can come into the office 5 days a week but also have the flexibility to work from home when needed
No. That’s a myth the companies say so they can fill their empty offices with people stuck in cubes. Do you honestly think most companies care about employee development? Most companies don’t have proper budget or even provide their employees with training or time to grow. It’s great PR but actions speak louder. DC is not any better! They don’t even have a proper mentorship program. There’s no substitute for personal initiative, grit, and determination.
What’s the value add for being in person? So the Partners and Directors can see you? I talk to all of my colleagues, both up and down my chain of command. Network? I can message whoever I want to have a call on Teams. Professional development? You mean sit in a conference room where someone presents takeaways from their prior engagement? They do those virtually now and I can watch the recording whenever I want. Face time? I invite the people that I want to talk to out to golf, dinner, lunch, or coffee. Much more valuable.
The only people who will be stunted by this are people that weren’t going to make it in person anyway.
If you have Americans who go out to dinners with you which you’ve never seen before then congrats! In the NE if you live in Long Island then a person in NJ is like 2 hours away or maybe 3. Nobody is hanging out with you unless you are a very important person. But if they had to be in the office then you can meet them and maybe go for lunch. Going golf together is a great way to network but I am more European and never liked it. How on earth will you have coffee with someone 3 hours away???
Yes
