It's totally worth the effort. We utilize shift leaders as mentors for the new employees and allow new employees to shadow for a significant amount of time before they're on their own. I think that what we've got going right now is working pretty well but we have definitely struggled with training in the past too.

Do that not have training positions in stores? At the DC they have a training operations manager, training specialists which is a level 2 merit position a few steps down from an operations manager, and team member trainers which do nothing but train and are in an elevated pay bracket for it above the hourly pay rate.

I will say that a lot of training is done on the fly now. I still think that deep dives are required as necessary. Companies expect staff to pick up habits of doing great work under less experienced management.

There should be set processes and continuing education after your role for sure.
I'd say our training is pretty spotty, it varies a lot, so far as I can tell. And you'll run into new employees who seem to have been thrown into things they really aren't prepared for. I do agree that it's something that should be invested in, it saves problems down the road. If I was calling the shots, there would be better training.

It really is the foundation of a solid workforce.
Honestly no. I have had employees who have really struggled because my company doesn't really have a comprehensive training program and its something we have been working on. It tends to be a learn as you go thing and not everyone can do that.

Putting processes down on paper is definitely a lot of work but it makes for easier operation long term.
