Do you usually apply for a job only when you meet close to 100% of the requirements, or do you still go for it if you only check some of the boxes? I’ve been going back and forth on this, especially since job requirements feel like a bit of a moving target anyway. I find myself wondering where that line really is. Curious what % others feel comfortable with before hitting apply.

Haha, truth.

Never hurts to apply even if you don’t check all the boxes

Exactly—it never hurts to try

I apply if I match 60-80% of the description. Some companies are willing to teach the use of ERPs, Claude, etc. My problem is that I don't have a degree. I've been working without one for over 20 years, so I still apply for jobs that have Associates or Batchelor degree as a requirement anyway. However, I don't just willy nilly apply for everything either. Try it, you never know who'll bite.

I appreciate that, apparently it doesn't hold weight in today's job market, though. I'm not worried as much as I would have been previously. I am looking into other options, too.

I definitely don’t worry about meeting 100% of the requirements. If I do meet them, then I’m likely not going to grow and learn new things. Most hiring managers don’t need someone who checks all the boxes; instead, they need someone who checks some of them but is willing to learn the rest quickly

I just spoke with a software architect that went back to school to learn software engineering after law school because it was more lucrative and had less hours. He’s worked his way up and has the skills and authority to work 6:30am-10am and gets to work remotely. We discussed that results/outputs is better than billable time like in law and public accounting. Yet, his parents and others would view him as “lazy” but he does his job and makes a fantastic living. Time>Money and Results>Hours
