By reminding yourself the path you’re on is the right path for you
I have a buddy who is a senior accountant financial reporting at “large corporation” and the big four auditors come in always kinda look down on her. Her take is whatever I’m paying my bills, gaining good experiences, and I’m happy here.
Here’s the thing though I’ve always been happier at the more prestigious places I work. It’s not so much bragging rights it’s more the people I’m around, growth opportunities, and type of work
Because in accounting if you’re not a cpa or working for the big four you’re a L haha 🤷♀️
I hear you
I really think that 🥕 of partner (which most of us won’t get to) really does make someone feel more superior 🤷♀️
I don’t really understand what kind of proud to be honest. At the end people care about their own lives.
You should be proud that you are happy
You should be proud as it’s a reflection of your own choices in life. Generally speaking, finding a job is as active of a choice as you can make. However, if you truly despise your company you should consider companies that are more in line with your values. Working at a place you hate isn’t great for your mental health not to mention it might even be a detriment to your work quality.
I’d rather be proud of the things I’ve accomplished in life, and not the things I’ve accomplished at work. For some, they’re both the same. But for me, I think it’s weird, especially in accounting. We’re recording keeping, reporting, and analyzing FS, not saving lives or extending the lifespan of the human race.
It’s a legitimate question. I have a friend and former team member who left B4 to make partner at a smaller firm. Specialty tax so we deal with a lot of technical issues. Overall he likes it but he did think it was weird that he was now basically the equivalent of national tax for their firm, and people came to him for answers / sign off. That’s one of the things I enjoy about working at B4 - there’s always someone who knows the answer. For me that’s worth some of the B4 suffering, but it comes down to what is important to you.
Be proud of what you value more. If working for a big company with a title and perks is what you value, it's okay to be proud of it and try your best not to be boastful. If the overall work/life balance, you can focus on that and be proud of the things you do outside of work.
This is what I noticed with some clients, their offices are filled with family pictures and hobbies and they are excited to go home. They work to live. I at that time was career driven and wanted to see how high and far in the corporate ladder I could reach and couldn't understand. I was living to work then, sadly.
Adjust what you focus your attention to and genuinely enjoy it and everything else will align in time.
No, but being proud of what you come home to might take the edge off.
This a personal choice determined on what you value the most. No organization is perfect, but I made a choice early in my work career to choose places to work with marketplace reputations that I could be proud of.
With that, I turned down some opportunities with organizations that always seemed to be in the news media for the wrong reasons.
