People in tax - do you find that busy season never ends?

I think TM1 is being a little unfair. I'm also a manager and my busy season this year has been awful. I haven't slowed down since July and have a ton of calendar year provision work Jan-March. Getting two months a year of 40 hours and ten of 60+ sucks. At the same time, it takes about six months for our new staff to understand what it actually means to be busy.

like

Yes. I have 2-3 months a year where I'm not 'slammed' and am merely busy.

like

No. Staff need to realize if they put in the time during busy season and stay efficient shortly after, the rest of the year would be fine. By taking May off essentially it ruins the rest of your year. Staff don't work newly efficient enough and complain when they are too busy. It is very easy to be a staff in my office now.

like

This varies from office to office.. but we aren’t in “busy season”, yet there’s a bunch of admin work, estimates, fiscals, etc to do. Then managers/partners will come and ask for agendas, models, and other presentables and ask for it same day or tomorrow because it’s a “slow time”. So always busy.. just not 12hr days like near a deadline

like

I actually think TM1 makes a very fair point

I think it depends on how your office assigns work. For instance, in my office until you are a manager you don’t really specialize. So I work on corps, partnerships, and a few individuals. Plus I work on calendar year and fiscal year clients. This means that I am busy all the time since I basically have return/provision due dates every two-three months and that doesn’t include estimates, extensions, and out of scope work. It gets easier once you specialize because you know when you will consistently be busy. The work load for seniors is huge, and we have above average turnover.

like

It never ends. 11 hour day is best day all year.

I‎t doesn’t

Yes, I’ve been fully utilized since January

Agree. Most managers and seniors at my office are busy year-round, and the idea of 'busy season' is pretty nonsense. One manager told me his 'slowest' time of the year is November where he still has to put in ~50 hours.

Asking for wife who's also in banking. If she got ~$100k in signing bonus in 2019 for 1 year commitment in CA and started FT in July 2020, assuming she leaves before July 2021, can her employer claw back full amount in California? Some say it's much tougher to do so under CA law but wonder if anyone has any insights. Banks won't likely care about analyst signing bonuses, but associate bonus at EB with diversity bonus can be significant. If she quits before, she won't be going to another bank.

I’m hoping someone might have some ideas about this- I’m currently five years out of law school with a clerkship, a tax LLM, 3 years of experience doing transactional tax work and a few months of EC/VC experience (which I recently switched to from tax). I like the EC/VC work, but I don’t know how long I want to stay in biglaw. Can anyone weigh in on how employers for in-house roles might look at my experience in a year or two?

But when I want pizza or wings or burgers I have to hear a whole spiel. “Can we pick something healthier?” “You can order ___ but can I choose something else on the menu?” “I don’t knowwww” like MY GOD. Then if I order something for me he wants half or bites! Sick of it!!!

I live in metro Atlanta. I’m looking to move to a space that has a more suburban feel, but is still close enough to the city to not hamper my social life. I like going to the party - not constantly living in it. Any suggestions? Currently renting, but open to buying in the next three years.

Did anyone get interviewed for enterprise architect position at Collibra. Would like to know the experience and the process.

I was just informed after the third round of interviews they’d like at least 5 references, two must be supervisors. My last job was a temporary remote job where I didn’t really interact with my supervisor and the jobs before that were at my family’s business (I do not speak to any of them for serious personal reasons.) Anything before that was grad school and I haven’t kept in contact with any professors from over five years ago. What should I do? 😕
