Does adding beneficiaries in my high-yield savings account increase my FDIC insurance limit? My small bank rep said I can increase 250k per each added beneficiary (up to 5), but my quick Google search have conflicting answers

Yes, it does. Little known secret. Love seeing all the freshly minted commercial banking “experts” say no

Pretty sure joint accounts are up to 500k. Wealthfront joint accounts are insured up to 4 million.

like

Wealthfront is different because they literally farm your deposits to different banks to keep you under the limit

like

That sounds wrong. The insurance is per account holder (not per account), but I don’t think beneficiaries are account holders. Perhaps a second name on the account for access?

No

Depends on how the account is held. There’s a page on Ally that explains this well, but if it’s a transferable upon death account with beneficiaries then yes, it increases with extra beneficiaries.

If the account is a trust, fdic insurance is based on benes. Otherwise - no

No lol.

Yes- these accounts are converted to trust accounts wherein each beneficiary can provide an additional $250k worth of insurance. You can calculate your coverage on the FDIC’s EDIE calculator:

https://edie.fdic.gov

Although yes, I'd probably still prefer to keep max $250k between different banks anyways. Feels like too many eggs in one basket (bank) with current financial landscape.

My partner and I bought our home back in 2020. We got a good deal, low rate. But we want to move into a more spacious SFH. However, as we all know this market is crazy. Everything we want costs $620k+ and bc of rates it makes our mortgage estimates $3500+. We are currently paying $2k. And it looks we need to sell the house simultaneously as look for a new one or our contingency isn’t as attractive. I know it’s based on personal circumstances. But what would you do? - not move, sell and buy?

My fiancé and I (ages 30 and 31) are about to buy a house. We would put down 10% for a 835k purchase price. Our combined income is $265k. We both have around 7-10k left in emergency funds (each) and combined about 200k for retirement. Our mortgage is $4,500 a month and we split a car payment for $800. Is this an okay financial decision or should we have bought a cheaper house/saved more?
