It’s fun to get a witness who just doesn’t know how to be deposed, and keeps talking and talking with excellent quotable material for summary judgment.

Hands down one of the best parts of being a trial attorney.

I love it, but I’m a litigator! Don’t deny it can be stressful.

I enjoy anything I can bill for, except discovery requests.

like

I love second-chairing depos because of this. Sure, the prep can be a nightmare, but then I get to bill for 8+ hours of passing exhibits and taking notes.

Old Dog contribution ... find a way to like it. Good dep skills are a huge opportunity to be valuable to the senior attorney on the case and — done correctly — great prep for trial examinations. Of course, I have fouled my share of deps too. Cannot be a great litigator without great dep skills. Period.

“Enjoy” is a bit aggressive. I enjoy having a drink on the beach. But as far as lawyering goes, it’s pretty fun (once your prep is done). Gives you a chance to face people and cut through BS and posturing, and have some fun.

Me! I love it. Defending is fun, too.

Absolutely enjoy it!

I’ve recently started work at a very young tech startup. Coming from a big law background, this was a huge change of pace/environment. I’m having a lot of trouble getting used to how unstructured the startup is. It feels like hire ups give a set of instructions then talk as if they don’t remember, or then decided rules A, B, C and D applies without being clear this was the case. Is this just the general startup environment? If you experienced this before, how did you deal with It?

Hi all. I’m finishing up school and looking to start applying for jobs in tech, I’m going for computer science, what range of salary should I expect going into this field?

I know that some other associates at my level are approximately 30% behind other associates in hours on a month to month basis. Yet all of these associates say they are “at capacity”, and myself and another associate still end up being assigned work instead of them. How do we handle this? For reference, all associates are around the firms minimum requirement, it’s just that a few of us are 30+% over and it is leading to burnout.

I work for a small firm (about 20 attorneys) and make 90k. I’m coming up for a raise discussion in a couple of months but don’t know how to go about it/what is reasonable to ask for. I bill about 35 hrs/week at 400/hr, so I think I deserve a bump, especially considering the posture of the market. Any advice/feedback from similarly situated associates or partners at similarly sized firms?

Does anyone work at a firm where legal assistants don't do legal assistant things? For example, I have to do my scheduling and calendaring. I have to upload documents to our file management system. I work in a firm that is known for litigation defense. I’ve been developing my own plaintiffs practice as well. I am able to pay the bills with my hourly defense work, which gives me time to focus on a handful of high value PI case a year on contingency. I was recently negotiating a case and was told part of the reason the claims rep/OC was jerking me around was because they didn’t see me as a plaintiffs attorney. Is there any way to change this perception or does it just come over time?

I am an associate at an AM200 firm and was (IMO) very clear prior to accepting this role that I value work-life balance and wanted to try to keep work at night on the weekends to a minimal, but since February, it seems like it’s always something that requires my time as needed disregarding “business hours” or my personal schedule. Thoughts on whether to bring this up or continue to be a team player until I burn out and pay off my student loans?

I’ve been working at a rather prestigious midsized firm in a big city for almost a year and a half now. I have been having a lot of trouble picking up work from senior partners. We are required to bill at least 150 hours per month to meet our requirement. My months are typically only 110-130 hours. It seems like the senior partners already have their “go to” associate for things. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can increase my workload? I reach out for work pretty much weekly.
