Does anyone else ever have the feeling that no matter what you’re doing it just isn’t enough? A feeling like you’re never caught up enough and not finding enough projects to work on or not completing those projects fast enough?

Basically is it normal to always feel unsettled even if you’re doing a good job as far as reviews and feedback?

Yes. But I’m confused as you say you’re never caught up but also not finding enough projects to work on. Those seem like antithetical statements.

That’s normal. Same for me at a firm. You prioritize and do the best you can, while not letting work consume your entire existence. If there are more specific things you are struggling with like task management or scheduling, then I’d suggest keep organized to-do lists in order of priority and blocking off time for things so meetings can’t be schedule and you can focus during that time. Turn phone and chat notifications off during those times.

It can be helpful to reframe a bit. Whenever a task comes in I ask myself “when does this need to be completed to maintain my desired reputation” and then I calendar time to complete the various components of the task so we meet that deadline.

Maintaining my “desired reputation” is my actual goal and I fit my workflow around it. I may send emails early in the morning or late in the evening to maintain the perception. It’s not uncommon to sit on a finished product (not yet due) and give myself extra time to review, and submitted via email at a time I’ve deemed useful.

It’s also helpful to keep a list of back burner projects to do when you have the bandwidth so that you’re constantly churning out work at your desired cadence

Yeah, your job isn’t to do good work. It’s to be PERCEIVED as: doing timely good work, helpful, etc.

You have to protect them from themselves a bit. If you let them treat you as a magician who pulls a rabbit out of your hat, they’ll expect miracles every time. They won’t send things timely, won’t give you time for diligence, expect you to just bail them out of bad decisions left and right.

So I make them clear some very low bars 3 inches off the ground, and work at maybe 70% capacity day to day. This lets me crank up to 100% for a true emergency (and if they think it’s at 150%, they don’t expect it all the time).

It helps to remember that you’re not being paid to sell hours or for output, you’re actually paid for your bandwidth availability to tackle problems. That’s it. Don’t try to kill yourself working around the clock.

I am a contract employee that was just brought on a month ago. I have done well with onboarding and learning their tech. Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

I’m in-house at a small company (60 people), started right out of law school about 5 years ago. We had a legal team of 5 then. Everyone has left and we just hired a new GC. I went from $70k to $100k a little over a year ago. I am expecting an offer from a firm doing business law work but think this might be an opportunity to go to my current employer and ask for a significant raise, with new offer in hand. Any thoughts or advice going into this?

I have one pro bono case that I kept when I left my firm to go in house. It’s a matter completely unrelated to my company and I have malpractice insurance through the nonprofit organization associated with the case. I’ve made clear to my client that I’m repping this client in my personal capacity. No one has asked me specifically about pro bono stuff at my company - if I know there’s no conflict of interest, is this something I should disclose? To whom should I disclose this?

Considering taking a position with a small-cap in the US trying to build their legal department. The title is standard “counsel” although the work would be with the senior leadership team and reporting to the GC in Europe. How reasonable is it to ask for a bump in title - Senior counsel or Head of Legal, US? If it matters, I am a 6th year and have been told that I will be expected to hire a junior or paralegal as we build up.

Any in-house antitrust counsel willing to offer up some advice? I just started in a firm's well-regarded antitrust group. What do I do over the next few years to make myself most marketable to move in-house? And when is that move actually feasible/ideal for antitrust specialists?

Seems like I can pull work from the whole discipline (merger clearance, civil lit, criminal) — should I spread myself across all of it to maximize my skillset/marketability?

Currently working in-house for a large bio pharma - like the company and most of the people, but the work is really getting monotonous and I just leaned through the grapevine that I am making significantly less money ($15k to $30k) than others in the same level/grade as me. The work I do is equally difficult and I have a smaller team because people have left, so there is no way “type” of law justifies this. I think I just did a poor job negotiating my salary and raise. Any tips on what I can do?
