Many folks have come to slalom from Accenture over the years I've been here at all levels. I also came to slalom for better wlb and no travel when I was with a boutique firm and 2 kids. It's been Great to be able to stay in consulting as I thought I was going to have to move to industry
I'm done with work at 5pm daily which is great plus have flexibility to be very autonomous in managing when I have kids appointments, conferences, or the ad hoc performance which I didn't get at my last firm. And of course local/remote work with next to no travel though i know many firms shifted that way during covid. Slalom staffs much leaner teams than I've seen from Accenture but that's just my limited experience sample size.
Been at slalom 4+ years, and only traveled 4 days total haha. It’s great as a mom of two little kids! That being said, If you’re used to great bonuses don’t come here. My bonus is 12% and last year they gave me 5% even though my metrics were all exceeded because “the economy”….
I wish we even got 5% anymore…
Yeah, I can think of half a dozen names of just people that I’ve worked closely with who came from Accenture. Through conversations I’ve gathered that the work is often similar, but it’s a bit less stressful at slalom, and that not having to travel was a big motivator for the majority of the people I know.
It’s a common pipeline to go from Accenture to Slalom. Would I recommend it? I guess it depends.
Is WLB the most important thing, over comp and raises and promotions? Then yes, slalom is probably a fine alternative (although keep in mind they’re moving from a more regional model to a national one, so the history of limited/no work travel may not have a lot of bearing on future expectations in that area).
Consulting has had a rough go of it post-Covid, but morale at Slalom is not great among high performers who have been busting their tushes for years in hopes of getting a promotion that never materializes. You may be luckier than the people I know (and I’m not sure what it looks like at the MD level) but I wouldn’t make the jump unless you’re ok with stagnation.
What is almost an MD?
If you are almost an MD, you almost certainly should stay and get it. If you aren't really likely to get the promotion (and only you know this and you need to be honest with yourself) then you may as well move.
Slalom don't have the same name recognition, and they don't get the same multi-multi-million dollar gigs, but they are good and they get good work.
But if you are moving because you dislike the Accenture travel it won't be much different at Slalom. So if it just travel convincing you to go I'd stay where you are - especially if you are going to be an Accenture MD (more options for exit will be available if you have that MD promotion under your belt)
