Does anyone work for lewis brisbois? If so, is there a lot of micromanaging by partners?

Totally office and practice group dependent. It's pretty common for folks to crap on Lewis Brisbois for being ID, and of course it's not the same level of deals/work as you would get at a peer firm like Cravath or Kirkland, but if you aren't in the running for those caliber firms anyway, it's not a bad gig.

Very good work/life balance and the pay is not as bad as folks make it out to be. 200's very doable if you can bill, and there are a decent number of folks making 300's. Of course if you can build a book, those numbers go up even more.

Generally left alone. They allow folks to work remotely, sometimes even in other states from their home office. Imagine an in-house lifestyle, but at a firm and that's Lewis Brisbois.

Don’t do this to yourself. That is a last resort firm.

It’s an ID mill. ID is bottom of the barrel work. Big ID mills will work you for high hours with garbage pay. Why even go to law school to be so overworked and underpaid?

likefunnysmart

Not sure you want to work for that firm, they are bottom of the barrel in the legal sector. Acceptable if you currently have no offers.

Salary isn’t worth the hours imo.

Garbage firm.

Mostly no. You will probably get hovering if you’re new, but if you prove trustworthy you’ll be left alone to handle your own cases over time. I have two 1st years and have a lot of interaction with them but they are still in the “don’t know what they don’t know” stage.

like

And yes- it is an “ID mill”- and yes, if you get a better offer elsewhere, take it. But we don’t just serve discovery and settle. Some cases we get have opportunities for the ‘bigger things’ in litigations- summary judgment motions, trials, appeals. etc. Depending on your group you’ll see private clients as well. And honestly, as someone else said on here, the ID cases can be better client wise as you are typcally not concerned about collections, cash flow and costs for typical stuff with ID.

I wasn't micromanaged and there was a ton of work. I billed a lot. I latereled out ASAP though when it became clear my supervising partner was not going to help me develop business. Two years later I'm billing nearly 400h less for more than double the pay.

likefunny

The laughing react to my post pretty sums up LBBS! Lots of (low quality) work, you're underpaid, and rainmakers won't develop you professionally. In my specialty it was hard to lateral because other firms knew we weren't handling high caliber work.

funny

I used to. At my office there was no micromanaging. Only partners can communicate directly with insurance adjusters and clients for the most part, tho. So you’ll have to draft the correspondence, send to partner, then they send it to adjusters. Associates get promoted a lot to partner at around year 7.

likefunny

If you can’t talk to Adjustors, all you are is a discovery dog.

likefunny

Most partners, anywhere, would rather not micromanage for billable hour concerns unless they do not like you and are making a case for why they should get rid of you. I have worked at Cravath, Weil, Pillsbury, O’Melveny & Myers, and Sidley. Steer clear of Sidley.

I’m at a mid size transactional firm. I’m a total night owl and my partners have OK’d me starting the workday at around 11am because I regularly work until midnight or later. I get so much more done after dark! I still get some side eye from other associates, but 🤷🏽‍♀️

Does anyone else here have an unusual work schedule? Curious what adjustments you’ve made to make it work.

PARTNERS: two questions —1. If you see an associate has really low hours for the month, do you imagine them chillen on a beach somewhere or do you consider they probably spent most of their days sitting in front of the computer being “available”? 2. If you send an associate a random e-mail on a weekend like “Can you pull X and send to Y”, would you get annoyed if they responded saying they weren’t by a comp or would you consider it reasonable that they wouldn’t be by a comp on a weekend?
