Anyone here work in-house and sit in an open office environment? I sit next to accounts receivable and some marketing folks and can’t focus even with earplugs in. Any advice would help.

Good (Bose or Sony) noise cancelling headphones. It's a common issue with in-house departments, unfortunately.

I’m in-house and all attorneys have offices. Too much of our work is confidential or sensitive and shouldn’t be shared around the rest of the business. How do you handle those issues in an open space?

like

It sounds like you are the only attorney and have the ear of the CEO. I think it imperative that you make them understand the risk and if nothing else work from home. I’m not sure how they expect you to handle any confidential matters in an environment like that.

Ask to work from home

like

I have, but they said we want you in the office to “build relationships” with your coworkers. I work from home once every few weeks though

I tried that and could still hear them. They are loud, i mean laughing hard loud as if they are sitting in their living room. Have raised the issue to the ceo (who i report to) over 3-4 times and he says nothing he can do.

I would hope you spoke with your coworkers first before telling the CEO. Otherwise, if I was your coworkers I’d turn the volume up a bit out of spite.

ANC headphones plus white noise/music.

Ask them to be quiet.

Can you work in a conference room whenever it’s open?

I am not “supposed to” but i do so anyways for about 3-4 hours a day. I also try to take all the calls in there for obvious reasons.

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? TIA!
