I just don’t say anything. They hire based on merits.
Unconscious bias is a thing - I would not disclose a disability.
Probably depends on the disability... Missing a leg? Who cares. Mental disability? Might be an issue.
I never disclose my disability anymore. I did once and two weeks later I was put on a pip for poor performance (never had an issue with my performance prior got a nice raise and bonus right before). Then let go shortly after. HR is to protect the company’s not the employees.
It’s mainly for having to reasonably accommodate you for your disability I believe.
Here’s my thought as a disabled person: if the answer to any specific question has no part in the hiring decision then they would not ask until after the hiring process has been completed. I know, private, not accessible to others, Federal law, yada yada yada. Basically, HR people are snakes and weasels who will do anything anything everything to keep their employer’s social image pristine while practicing the most horrific people-manipulation you could possibly conjure up. I have given up and just put disabled on my application info, knowing I will not get hired. You should see how excited potential employers are about my accomplishments… until they see me walking. I’m thinking of buying a wheelchair and seeing if that is more socially accepted. Any thoughts on the wheelchair idea?
It's illegal to turn someone down for employment based on a disability, unless it would impact the work. But that just means a potential employer will never explicitly state that's the reason. If you think it's something that will affect your work, you'll need to disclose it at some point. But you never know, disclosing it during the application phase could disadvantage you, even if that's never stated.
Further clarification. I've never used my disability as a crutch, and you can't tell from looking at me. Under prior administrations, I was considered a "box checker" which I otherwise would not fall under, so previously it could have been touted regarding "inclusivity." I've seen great feedback either way, but I think with all things current, there's no benefit to checking that box.
Why are you wanting to leave CR? Are you currently a senior manager that you are getting offers of 250k plus? I feel underpaid haha.
What is your level?
There is an accommodation angle to this. In my office there’s one floor that needed an automatic door for someone and that door cost $30k. Small companies can’t cope with those extra expenses that easily.
