I just quit from a VP role with the most toxic company ever (after 23 yrs of consulting & 5 years in industry- 3rd job in industry), & am thinking now that I’m prob not a fit in the industry, just so much mediocrity that we in consulting are not used to.
I’d say go for the reputation rather than title. Being an SVP & doing the job of a manager means very little. It’s what you do
Titles don’t have a lot of meaning unless is with MBB/Big4/F50 where the titles are well understood.
If you’re wondering if you take a VP or Director job go to the company where you would enjoy the work most. The most important thing is to have a great relationship with the people, and you feel the work is important and enriching to your life. That goes for money too. Choose the job you enjoy more over money (to an extent)
What matters is the seat at the table. Authority to make decisions is directly co-related to job titles, to that exten titles matter. Being in an insignificant role in a big brand is not going to help.
There needs to a be a balance. We can’t ignore the the fact that titles DO matter.
Differs internal vs external. Internal, no, your brand and network matter way more, but to jump companies your title will matter.
No - I was a non profit national director / promoted from a regional executive director role. Took a position at a top tech company and they hired me in at an IC role. The experience of this has been soul sucking.
