I was in consulting for 13 years and was in industry for 6 years before returning
Here is what I know: The big 4 will not give you any extra credit and may even be wary of you ( the typical excuse is ‘ he may not know how to sell’ - especially if you are at the director level. However the smaller niche consulting firms are more receptive and appreciate what you bring
I understand that the big 4 are now changing slowly but time will tell
Thanks! Seems you were in big 4? If so at what level and how did industry perceive your consulting experience? I am thinking to go back to industry but not sure if being in consulting for only 1.5 years will be a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ thing?
Although not my personal move, but direct experience with a consultant rejoining industry.
From PWC (don’t remember the PWC title), but when they joined they definitely jumped a level and received a very high visibility senior manager role leading a center of excellence in corporate (turned out to be a terrible manager...)
Internal perception was positive when they started. I think they had 5ish years in consulting.
My perspective (started in industry for 3 years in consulting for 1 now): with the right reasons to move back, companies won’t hold it against you for only doing 1.5 years. And it might be a positive, you gained a new experience, but didn’t forget too much about how industry side works. (Unlike my story above, who was a deer in headlights to corporate life)
