Ask what is the, timeline when you get the assignment
Pro
Sorry, this is kind of stupid.
Just ask on the timeline or just say “will do, will get it to you by X”. If they push back on the latter, then you know the answer.
This isn’t rocket science.
OP, here’s a rule of thumb: for every single assignment you get, IMMEDIATELY follow up with “sounds good/will do, I can turn this by [date/time that works for you, OP]” and if they need it by a certain deadline, they will let you know. Take ownership over your life and schedule, because in this line of work if you don’t, others will.
I like to say “What’s the timeline we’re working with”? IMO it’s a good response to communicate a teamwork approach.
Oooo love this. I have a bunch of similar “we” phrases I use regularly. This is going on my list.
When do you need this by?
Otherwise I agree if you can’t get a straight answer the approach is to keep the partner informed. Either by saying when you expect to complete or otherwise checking in as to what is on your plate and when you will get to the assignment.
And listen, while others are saying just ask, I have certainly been in situations where I get an assignment and cannot get an answer on timeline or the partner is vague. It is not always easy to manage up.
Just ask what the deadline is
