Ever worked somewhere that pushed the “we’re a family” narrative? I have, and spoiler: it usually meant blurred boundaries, unpaid overtime, and a guilt trip for not putting the company first. Suddenly, staying late wasn’t optional, taking PTO felt like abandoning the team, and any pushback was met with, “But we’re all in this together!” A real family doesn’t lay you off to “cut costs.” But maybe I’m cynical—have you actually worked somewhere that made it feel genuine? Or is “we’re a family” just corporate manipulation dressed up as team spirit?

The "we’re a family" line is corporate gaslighting. A real family doesn’t cut benefits to boost profits. A real family doesn’t expect unpaid overtime. If a company calls itself a family, run.

The first place I worked that said that cut salaries during Covid but then reported record profits at the end of the year. And rewarded us with… a holiday party. Also they didn’t have maternity/paternity leave!

🚩 run for your life

Once upon a time I worked at a very small company, and while they didn’t really push the ‘family’ narrative, it was a really good group of people. The only reason I didn’t stay was because there wasn’t enough money to keep me long term. Anyplace that has to push something like that, probably isn’t a good thing. Actions speak louder than words.

It's not just you. Work is not a family -- it's work. Unless you're in a family business, in which case, if you're not family, it's just business.

You're a new manager with direct reports. One of your directs is very determined. You consider yourself a good manager so you want to help them grow. They are killing it and taking on an enormous of workload, and executing flawlessly. Do you let them continue killing it? Ask how they're doing? Or warn/advise them on how to avoid burnout?

Does anyone else just not even want to be a people manager anymore?! The amount of work this is taking, I’m just so over it. In addition to them piling on my work (which is a full time job) the people management stuff is just as much a full time job that no one in management seems to take into account. I have tried countless times to explain this but I end up burnt out, everyone suffers including me. I just left one role bc of it and now this new role, same thing. I’m over it.

I would like to make a career move into IT Management (i.e. DevOps Manager, Director of Cloud Ops, etc.). When it comes to skills needed, what should my focus be on and how would that translate onto a resume? I would love to still be hands-on to utilize my tech knowledge.
