I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?
My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.
L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

I just made the transition to management a few months ago. Leading people is hugely different than leading technical work, but focus on the mentoring portion of being a team lead, like really show how you lifted up your peers and Jr devs. Instead of highlighting the tech skills you learned in each roll, highlight how you improved as a communicator and an authority over whatever product. Show your ability to plan and architect projects, not just execute them. Emphasize your familiarity with agile and whatever other forms of project management. For the interview be prepared with lots of good anecdotes of your people networking skills and how you handle pressure.
