dumb question but are they sending emails at 9pm because they worked a 12 hour day? Or did they log off during the day to go grocery shopping, go out to dinner, pick their kids up from school at 3, etc and are just finishing the day on their schedule?
Work for the government
I’m currently working in industry. My manager sometimes sends emails at night because she has 3 kids and wants to make up her hours. But she never expects me to check her emails at night. I can check it up in the morning. In the end of the day, the work is done and that’s all it matters.
Why doesn’t she just set a scheduled delivery time so the email sends during work hours? I may be self projecting but when some people claim the emails is not meant to be read during work hours but send it anyway they may be hoping for the recipient to read and in some instances, perform the work.
All of that can very greatly from organization to organization. Some have a frantic culture and revel in it. Others prize being calm and steady. At times it's inevitable that we'll get called upon to put in extra hours, but if you don't want that kind of culture 24/7/365 you need to keep looking.
