ACs are what would be considered consultants at other firms
Cs are effectively what managers would be at other firms.
Senior manager, Associate director maybe.
Manage multiple projects across multiple clients, in charge of building proposals, staffing teams, being a face for clients.
AC - leads workstreams, including analysis and execution or entire small projects, coaches As, develops deep expertise in a few topics, participates in BD, leads most of day-to-day client Comms. Typically at 2-3 projects at time with or without more junior support.
C - leads entire projects from start to finish or leads a workstreams on a large engagement while managing the team, is an expert in a few areas, leads BD initiatives and senior client relationships on projects (unless M/AP/P are doing it). Can be on 3-5 projects at times with junior support. I am a C now and have 5 projects and manage 8 people across them.
Pro
AC you are still expected to do majority execution (running analyses, building slides, etc) and minority leadership/project management.
C you are usually only working 5-15 hours on a project so your bandwidth can really be limited to leading the approach, managing the A/ACs, client calls. You are also much more autonomous on staffing and starting to get out of the staffing pool.
