I'm on the board of a non profit outside of work. It's super fun. I have lots of thoughts
I'm not running one, but am on the boards and have been thoroughly involved in many over the years. It's like a second hustle that I don't get paid for.
@BAH1 thoughts are very broad right now but it would overall be devoted to improving health outcomes and opportunities for people within Rural America. (Would be targeted at my rural hometown to begin)
@BAH2 how did you get involved with these boards ? Did you begin as a volunteer first?
Did for a year at the start of my career before passing off responsibility - was better placed in the hands of other people. Now stick to pro bono consulting but am looking to do it again.
Running it was far less time consuming than getting it off the ground. We eventually merged it into a larger organization to get some much needed scale, but that also did mean that we lost control of the organization. From a time perspective, running pro-bono strategy projects can be just as time consuming depending on the scope and speed.
It's a nice talking point, especially for somebody like me who was fresh out of undergrad (it certainly is a great talking point). I wouldn't say that I did it for that, though - did it for the passion, impact, and excitement of running a nonprofit. Hence why I want to do it again. 😀
A nonprofit in my city held a nonprofit board prep course as a primer for those interested in taking on a Board of Director position in the future.
Nice. Also from a rural area. The book Boards that Lead is a great book to read
OP, happy to connect if you want. I am also interested in economic development and health (not necessarily rural America, but I have heard more than plenty about issues there and would love to learn more).
What's the nonprofit for?
@Associate1 if you don't mind me asking what was was your reasoning to hand off--too time consuming? What were the benefits?
