Following up via email for a job with your interviewer thanking them for time + brief reiteration on why you’d be a good fit after you interviewed… do you do it ? How important is it?

Any tips for how an undergrad (i have a politics degree) could position herself as ready for financial/corp comms? Perhaps, any specific certification? I have had experience in some agencies working on corporate/finance/legal clients but it has not resulted in any interviews opportunity especially with the banks/ financial brands? What could be the issue?
