Both have their pros and cons. Plaintiff work can be mentally/emotionally exhausting because there’s a lot of client hand holding and managing expectations. There’s a lot more at stake when doing plaintiff work since it’s people’s lives you’re dealing with. However, no billable hours is nice and the sky’s the limit as far as earning potential since its contingency.
Insurance defence is less mentally/emotionally exhausting in my opinion. No hand holding. The outcome of the case barely matters. The focus is on billing your hours. It’s steady work that can pay decently well but there’s a cap on your earning potential.
If I had to choose, it would probably be insurance defence for the steady/less emotionally exhausting work.
