For those of you who have worked for a female and a male ECD/CCO in your career, what are some of the biggest differences between the two that you noticed? Aside from the biological ones.

Female CD are less emotional - no temper tantrums. They get more involved in the solve - I’ve never seen one give vague feedback like “keep going.”

Granted I’ve only worked with a handful of female compared to hundreds of male CDs. But that’s my take away

likehelpful

I think there are good and bad. Gender is a detail. Maybe a slight factor. But there morons and geniuses on both sides.

like

I’ve worked with both sexes in different countries over the years. I’ve worked with angry, political females and a had a gentle rational male and then a gentle rational female and a angry political male. Gender had very little to do with their different approaches. It really was the specific persons background that moulded their management.

no differences in gender.
just personality differences unrelated to gender.

I don’t thing gender has anything to do with it. I’ve had male and female ECDs. They can all be assholes

likesmart

I’ve worked with both for decades. I’ve found (not always, but often) that female CDs have more patience and are willing to teach, not just kill work. I found that the guy CDs tended to get competitive, and would try to change an idea and then claim ownership. I’m a woman so I’m biased, but my best experiences have been working for women

like

That’s exactly why I’d like to work for a woman. That and getting stuck in the middle of one too many dick swinging contests between ECDs and CCOs. I’ve had great male and female CDs, but never a woman steering the ship. It would be refreshing to be lead by someone with a different perspective. I have an old guard CCO who is just coasting into retirement. He says and does as much or as little as he pleases as often as he pleases. Not too many of us feel like he has our back. I know not all male CCOs are like this. My last one set the precedent for all male CCOs from here on out as far as I’m concerned. But I think there’s a real opportunity to grow/develop in different ways.

When female creative leads are being difficult, they’re labeled things like “bitchy, moody, crazy” whereas the very similar male bosses get things like “tough, intense, eccentric.” All negative words, but the former imply less self-control and don’t include the same power/respect as the latter.

likesmart

Lots of male cd’s deservedly get labeled as moody, crazy, bitchy, tantrum-prone, etc.

I’ve worked with both. As a female, unfortunately, I’ve felt like other female CDs were more competitive rather than collaborative

like

Interestingly, the least "emotional" place I ever worked was a female-run organization where +/- 10 of the 100 or so employees were men, myself included. It wasn't cold by any stretch, just very direct and professional. When someone was emotional, it was pretty much a non-event (unless consoling was appropriate) and people moved on with their day.

like

I had the opposite experience in a design shop where I was the one guy around 14 women. Mind games, emotional rollercoasters, game of thrones style manipulation. I’ll take direct and actionable management any day over emotional and manipulative bullshit. But I’ve also had manipulative and mind game driven male leads in my past too so It’s honestly I think it’s more of a cultural thing. People can adopt bad habits and traits of those around them just to keep their job

like

Silly question. I thought we were past stereotypes

smartfunny

We will be past stereotypes when they stop being mostly true, which will be never. Having said that, I’ve had good and bad male and female cd’s and don’t see a correlation.

like

This is a dumb question.

likesmart

I much prefer working with women. I’m partnered with a man for the first time in my career. He’s a whiny, egotistical baby. It’s exhausting

like

I’ve worked with awesome and shitty ECDs. No correlation in my experience.

like

It’s about the person not their gender. Idiots and mensches everywhere

smart

I’ve had lots of both, some good, some bad. ONE thing I can think of is that older female cd’s are overall a bit nicer to me than to their female subordinates, as I (a young good looking male) suspect I remind them of their sons.

like

I’m seeing the trend. This question may have been a bit short sighted on my part. I’ve only ever had male ECDs and CCOs. Just wanted to see if there was any real discernible difference in people’s overall experience. I’d never generalize behavior by gender. (Re: He leads this way because he’s a man and vice-a-versa)

Noting differences tied to gender will lead to generalization though

Did I stereotype someone?

Nah ACD3 is spot on and hasn’t even been rude when they called this out.
