Are student awards important in getting hired at an agency? If so, which ones do agencies tend to look at for student awards?

Nope. Believe it or not, Creative Directors are perfectly capable of judging the merit of an idea on their own. Don’t stress about student awards. Just focus on doing your best work.

like

McCann is also a horrible place to work at

like

my opinion is totally opposite from professional awards: student award shows are great. but not because of the award itself.

student award shows are usually competitions. so, they light a fire under students’ asses to get their portfolio piece built to a higher standard.

it’s always all about the book. i couldn’t care less about the hardware.

Yes they are very important. As a former Miami grad who had none trust me. A lot of your peers will have a bunch and it can seem odd if you don’t. Awards are “quantitive” way to determine your worth and therefore hire ability.
As far as the ones that are important same as real life

future lion? Mmm... They only accept digital works that show only innovative technologies instead of the concept.

like

It depends on the agency and person hiring. But awards mean nothing to me when I’m vetting candidates. It’s all about the work and personality

like

If you’re an international, then they’re really important. Gotta get that O-1!

like

My partners have been international students, and I feel that they are under different pressure than U.S. citizens. I love working with my international partners, and if our work is good to help them get an O-1 visa, then I'm happy for them.

I’m sure those running MAS tell you they do, as that is the lie they spewed when I went there. The truth is, they don’t. What matters more is raw talent, being able to work on a team, and being a good person.

like

MAS is crap.

like

Plenty of shit work wins awards...

like

It matters to recruiters. But any CD worth their salt looks past the awards at the work. A lot of student award shows are poorly judged anyway.

like

A lot of the best student books (especially VCU) have no awards. Just a lot of craft and usually a great side project.

like

Certain agencies still value awards. If you’re interested in a particular shop, go on LinkedIn and look at all the Juniors books. They’ll definitely tout their awards if they have them. If most of them have a number of awards (the ones that matter), then the agency cares about awards...if not, well...you know.

like

Nope. Student awards are as important as your high school GPA. And the student stuff always comes last in the actual judging, too - so a lot of judges are fried by the time they look at the student stuff. When I was in ad school I had this vision of CDs eagerly scanning student awards to discover their next prodigy - but really, no one cares.

like

My question is... can you do a kick a$$ job with or without an award? Are you willing to be a team player who’d work nights and weekends to win a pitch? Can you give 150% at 2a when all you had for dinner was a beef jerky and a hot pocket? If so, awards don’t matter, having passion and a determination to do great creative work is all you need and will shine brighter than any award.

like

Loving the sweatshop attitude! 🤦🏻‍♂️

like

Yes. I wish I would have paid more attention to them.

like

Might not help, but they never hurt. Go out for them but don’t let not having any stop you.

like

Awards are good if nothing else just to get noticed. It’s a good way to get your name out there and a foot in the door. If you have one good piece though and everything else in your book is mediocre it doesn’t do much

like

If your works show the good concept, hustle and nice executions, awards would be helpful a little.

like

It doesn’t matter and wherever you go they abuse juniors awards or not. Agencies don’t care

But, sometimes I feel stupid here, even for work which I have done previously. It's like I'm unable to understand instructions the first time around. And I have seen my colleagues getting annoyed by that. It's like I've become dumb. In my defence, I could say they're giving half assed instructions.

My book is just spec and side projects. I’m trying to get a new junior-to-mid role because I’ve gotten nothing good produced where I’m at, and I have zero faith this will change if I stick around.

I’m asked for work samples from recruiters and CDs even though I make clear that what I’ve done doesn’t reflect who I am as a creative. Think CRM/DM/B2B stuff. They insist on it, and I never hear back afterwards.

Not sure what to do. Almost feel like I’d be better off erasing my agency experience.

I am beyond stuck in my first 1.5 years of my career.

I was over promised opportunities at my first gig and then Covid hit. Leading me to have no portfolio worthy pieces from this 💩 agency with nothing great in sight. (place hasn’t won a pitch in my entire time here + lost clients)

Doesn’t everyone think they’re above average or are there people who actually think that they’re not as good as others? (Specifically in terms of advertising and for creatives)

Okay so for the longest time I thought that everyone thinks like me. (Bad mistake, I know). But a few posts on here have really made me think. So I’d love to know what everyone thinks.

I’m essentially partners with a creative director. If we wanted to run off together to another agency, would we be able to go as partners? Or does my title & small experience sample hamstring us both?
