I think the best way to create a mentor/mentee relationship (mentee here) is to take an interest in them authentically. Be genuine in your relationship and find those connections that your passionate about and ask how that person broke into that particular subject. I find that mentors tend to speak because they are engaged in the topic you’ve brought, but then if you can find an interesting perspective and make a parallel between your spheres of thought it helps. My mentors also hate cookie cutter answers, so being unique/having an interesting point or topic is beneficial.
💯 agree with you - very valid points. I’ve had many enjoyable mentorships when authenticity existed both ways.
My question, which I might have stated properly, was about finding such relationships outside our firms - given our travel, don’t really spend time enough locally to find and sustain mentorships.
