So, a recruiter gave me feedback that my lack SPHR or SHRM-SCP is causing my resume to be knock out by AI and human recruiters despite my position and work history in Multinationals and being in Technology. They suggested that we put SPHR ( Lapsed). I let it lapse in 2017. What is your opinion? Plus if I were to take another certification - should I take SPHR or SHRM-SCP?

There is no such thing as AI ATS. WE are the ATS. I assure you, I’ve been recruiting for over 10 years and I look at every applicants resume that comes across my dashboard. I am the AI. Lol. Let me repeat. There is no AI disqualifying your resume or my resume based on keywords.

like

Exactly - we always have knockout questions that are specifically job related, but they have nothing to do with your resume. Each candidate answers them and based on the answers they give determines initial eligibility. We still review every resume ourselves.

like

Sorry, it sounds like the recruiter is misleading you. Some organizations will indicate that certification is preferred but highly unlikely to make it a requirement.
1. Dont put false information on your resume
2. The ATS will not automatically reject your application but the recruiter can.
3. I would recommend you review your resume and compare it against the job you are seeking. There should be similar responsibilities and key words to make your resume stand out to the eye of the recruiter.

Good Luck!

Thank you. I just needed a gut check.

The advice DTA 1 gave is spot on. And I’ll add:
- if certification is not required but preferred, you *might* be being bested by those who have certification BUT, they also have relevant experience and qualifications to go along with it. So the lack of certification alone is not knocking you out.
- HR certifications (take your pick) only slightly enhance your visibility, not your qualification for most roles
- if you were SPHR certified before, and you feel like no longer holding the credentials is detrimental to your search, then go get the certification! If you don’t think you need it and you think you’re not being held back by not having it, don’t pursue it. You asked if you should do SPHR or SHRM-SCP- I have both and have a preference for SPHR; but I don’t look down my nose at SHRM-SCP certified individuals. Anyone that has a preference for one over the other has a reason as unique as they themselves are. So that’s your call. But you know the BOK and what taking the SPHR exam is like, so it may be easier for you to prepare for that one. Good luck to ya!

like

Curious about your preference. I have SHRM-CP and have considered the SCP, but it may not be worth it.

The ATS never “knocks out” a resume. It will however rate your resume and what I can share is many TA professionals will not read resumes rated below 65%-70% of a fit to the position. Did you have to answer any pre-qualifying questions? If a pre-qualifying question is “Are you SPHR OR SHRM certified?” That might be the reason the recruiter does not see your resume. However all resumes are stored in an ATS. Meaning they can be easily found if the recruiter goes digging. When I sat in TA, the amount of resumes that did not get reviewed due to the rating system was a shame on our team. ((Sigh)).

Do I think taking your SPHR will help, of course it will. But I’d bet money that not having that certification is not the only reason. What types of positions are you applying to? Are you easy applying and not reading the job descriptions? Are you applying to jobs that have certain requirements you don’t have?

like

Don’t like me on your resume, but I would add that you have it, but expired
The ATS does “knock you out” in the sense the recruiter may never see your resume. The recruiter will pick the top matches (usually via percentage) match, and call those candidates first. Look for videos on you tube/topic “ATS and resumes…tons of tips on how to get your resume noticed

like

Exactly! The rating game is real! I would agree, add it and say it expired. Then at least it’s on there and will increase the chances of being seen!

How many years of experience do you have, and what role are you looking to land? Will help how we frame the advice.

Over 15 years of HR and last 8 to 10 in Leadership roles. Presently Dir of People and Agile coach to a Mid Size Software company.

Someone gave me this advice and I’m not sure if it works or not but here goes. Copy the entire job description and paste it on your résumé in a font size 1 and then change the color to white. That way, any AI scanning your résumé will find you to be a 100% match to that job. They will have to manually read your résumé to screen you out.

Don’t lie and sounds like you need a new recruiter to work with.

Wasn't about lying but about put sphr (lapsed) on the resume. I didn't think that was necessary as my experience should speak for itself.

like

I would add it as lapsed just because as a person who recruits for my company it speaks a lot about you to have been able to get a certification. Even if lapsed you still have learned critical foundations of HR and it can only help you.

I was just let go from my company which I really enjoyed working at after only 9 months in a newly created role. I was completely blindsided and told it’s was due to scope and organizational changes. I had no performance reviews or discussions leading up to termination. It didn’t seem like this was a performance driven decision, but I feel completely left in the dark and unsure what to do in this economic climate. Should I ask for more severance (4wk/2 paychecks is what they offered)?

Hi there, I’d really love some advice from you all. In the last year I had to sell our home in Boulder, CO and embark on a new build process on a home in Tampa, FL. It turns out my dad can’t afford to live on his own so we found a home in FL that would have an in law suite. We locked in a rate but it expired and they are unwilling to extend due to the fact the builder is delayed and supply chain issues. Is there a smart way to structure loans now I’m unaware of? I’m super concerned.

My first thought was performance issues but manager confirmed not that. It’s getting really boring and need more engagement. What should I do?
